English 原文
Brine and sun-warmed tar drifted together through the calm morning harbor air.
Cedric stepped onto the side pier, a small pocket translator wheel rattling inside his canvas bag. He planned to explore an old buoy later, yet first he warmed the gadget. A metal cup held water poured from his breakfast flask, and thin steam curled upward. The sun had begun heating the granite ledge, so the cup refused to cool. Cedric lifted the wheel, noticing plates stuck where salt had crusted during the night. Salt spray glittered on the rail, and the wood felt mildly tacky beneath his palm. Pia strolled along the planks and called, “Too early for hidden secrets, Cedric?” He laughed once and bent again over the translator as her steps faded away.
A slower rhythm unfolded nearby, untouched by Cedric or the cup of water. Thick hemp rope hung from a hook, and dark pitch inside it started to soften. Rising warmth spread through the fibers, turning the sticky line glossy and almost liquid. Droplets formed, waited, and slowly lengthened under their own small weight there. Cedric twisted the freed plate, studying how light flashed on the damp brass. One droplet finally broke free and dropped onto the translator with a soft tap. A smoky smell burst upward, sharper than brine, and black streaks spread across the wheel. The stain let Cedric discover a thin crack hidden between two brass circles.
He rubbed with a cloth, yet the pitch only smeared and darkened the gap. Instead of forcing it clean, he began turning the marked circle to test the motion. The wheel rotated, though each click sounded slightly duller than before there. Above him, the rope stayed warm and glossy, and a second droplet already glimmered. Cedric rested his elbow on the granite, turning the translator slowly between steady fingers. The rope kept softening in the sunlight, and the wheel kept moving in his hand.
