Shade under the awning cooled the boards. Resin in the wood gave a dry, sweet smell. Oren took a small tin top from his pocket. He wound its little key; a tiny gear clicked. He set it down, and it twirled, then wobbled, then found its balance. The tip met a narrow seam and began to pivot around the knot. A signal bell rang once. A distant engine let out a short burst of white vapor. The top changed course at the seam and circled the knot in small orbits. "It turns all day," Oren said, nodding at the clock.
