She pushed her nose against the cool glass, and a ring of fog formed. Vernon kept his hand near the glass for a moment, then let it rest. Cleo tried again from a new angle and nudged the coaster with a light push. The slate scraped faintly, and the colored band climbed from the floor to the table. A small toy stegosaurus stood by a ceramic pot, its plates rough under dust. The sliding colors reached the toy, and each plate caught a different bright stripe. The stripes ran across its back in a tiny parade and then kept moving. A round cloth badge from a library reading campaign lay beside the pot. The band touched the badge, slid over the thread, and brightened a split second. The curtain stirred, and the stripes crept past the toy to the curtain hem.
