Cleo the cat had landed on the sunlit windowsill beside Vernon’s chair.
A clear glass of water stood on a slate coaster near the screen. A soft band of colors lay across the white wall and the floorboard. The painted wood felt warm under her paws, and the glass gave a tiny click. Dust hung in the light like a slow parade and turned in the draft.
Cleo set her paw in the colors on the wall and paused. Her whiskers leaned forward, and the tip of her tail stiffened. The band slid off her fur when she lifted her paw and stepped sideways. She pushed her nose against the cool glass, and a ring of fog formed. Vernon kept his hand near the glass for a moment, then let it rest. Cleo tried again from a new angle and nudged the coaster with a light push. The slate scraped faintly, and the colored band climbed from the floor to the table. A small toy stegosaurus stood by a ceramic pot, its plates rough under dust. The sliding colors reached the toy, and each plate caught a different bright stripe. The stripes ran across its back in a tiny parade and then kept moving. A round cloth badge from a library reading campaign lay beside the pot.
