What is in that gap?
Basil stands on his toes. An open thick book rests. The grandmother stands near. He looks through the page gap. Heels lift; smooth paper shows thin pollen.
Warm air comes from the radiator. Her voice hums a small song. Pages part. A fresh flower lies flat. A thin stem prints on paper.
A thin bar of light crosses the gap. It whitens the page. He walks to the weighted books. He peers at a lifted corner. Through that slit, a pale outline shows. His toes press the floor.
A phone on the cloth cover buzzes. "It is open," the grandmother says. She taps to buy more pressing paper. The soft song pauses.
Basil steps back to the gap. The bright line moves off. The light bar slides off the paper.
