Leah balanced a slim metal box on her lap while the tram rattled along Elm Street. Inside rested a clever color sensor that she had assembled for the afternoon science club. She has checked the battery twice, yet a small screen now blinked a warning about low voltage. The destination sign above the driver announced only three stops left, but a sudden jolt shook the carriage, and the box slipped. Wires brushed a coin in her pocket, and the screen went dark. As Leah scooped everything up, the entrance was blocked by a delivery trolley, delaying every passenger who tried to leave. Her eyes darted toward the closing doors, and her foot tapped the floor in quick bursts.

At the next halt, an elderly passenger, a retired inventor, noticed the silent sensor. Without asking questions, he opened his own toolkit, which was tucked beneath his coat. A spare cell the size of a postage stamp appeared, and a soft click connected it to Leah’s wires. The screen glowed green, delivering an audible pop of satisfaction. Together they stepped off just before the doors slid shut. Leah bowed slightly, her expression bright with thanks, and the sensor lit the club table like a tiny lantern.
