Lili woke early in the quiet village. She packed two small pies inside a tin box. The pies smelled delicious through the loose lid. She planned to assist her grandparent with lunch today. Her visits were frequent during warm months. A narrow lane led from her gate to the hill house. Halfway along, a heavy wheelbarrow blocked the lane. Lili stepped around the wheel, but the tin slipped. The lid opened, and sweet steam rushed out. Three geese resting nearby lifted their heads and hurried closer.

Flapping wings scraped the box from her hands. Pies rolled onto small stones and slid downhill. Geese chased the moving tins, knocking a bucket beside a bench. Water spilled across the path and soaked Lili’s shoes. She quickly grabbed the nearest tin. She dropped crumbs behind, and the birds pecked the ground. The brief pause gave space to collect the second tin. She climbed the last steps and pushed the door open. Inside, the grandparent placed fresh pies on a tray. Both tins joined the new pies on the table. A knife sliced them, and warm crusts cracked.
