What Popped from the Turkey?- 適合初級的英語短篇故事

Soft morning light filled the busy kitchen.

Nora lifted the heavy turkey from the oven rack. Her cousins formed a line toward the long table. They named her leader for this short walk. She wanted to place it at the center before celebration. A basket of harvest fruits waited near the plates. A small brown cat jumped onto the narrow counter. Its tail knocked a bowl of shiny seeds sideways. Seeds scattered, rolled, and loudly hit a tall jug of apple juice. The juice splashed across the white tiles under Nora's shoes. The floor turned slick, and the platter slowly began to slide. Nora bent her knees to quickly reduce the shaking plate.

The platter still moved, sliding toward the edge. Her cousin Leo quickly grabbed a wide cloth from his pocket. He dropped it on the juice, stopping the spread just there. The cloth soaked the liquid and stayed flat. Nora steadied the turkey with both hands and walked ahead slowly. Drips fell, but plate and bird reached the center safely at last. She set the platter down; steam rose over the table top. A soft pop came from inside the hollow bird. A bright toy soldier sprang out and rolled across the plate. The cousins gasped and then laughed at the strange cargo inside dinner. Nora lifted the toy, wiped it, and placed it beside tall candles. Steam still rose, and dinner could finally start right then. Forks tapped the plates, and voices filled the room.

諾拉把沉甸甸的火雞從烤架上端出來。她的表兄弟姊妹排成一列，走向長桌。他們在這短短的路上推她當領頭人。她想在慶典前把火雞放到桌子中央。一籃豐收的水果已經擺在盤子旁。一隻棕色小貓跳上窄窄的料理台，尾巴把一碗亮閃閃的種子掃到一邊。種子四散滾動，大力撞上高大的蘋果汁壺。果汁濺到諾拉腳下的白色磁磚上。地面變得滑溜，托盤慢慢開始滑動。諾拉彎膝，用力穩住晃動的盤子。

托盤還在往邊緣移動。表哥利奧迅速從口袋抽出一條大布巾，蓋在汁液上，阻止擴散。布巾吸住液體，平平貼著地面。諾拉雙手扶穩火雞，慢慢向前。幾滴汁落下，但盤子和火雞終於安全抵達中央。她放下托盤，蒸氣在桌面升起。火雞裡忽然傳出輕輕「啵」的一聲，一個亮色玩具士兵彈出來，沿盤子滾動。孩子們倒吸一口氣，接著笑看這份奇特的「內餡」。諾拉撿起玩具，擦乾後放到高蠟燭旁。蒸氣仍在上升，晚餐終於可以開始。叉子敲著盤子，說話聲充滿房間。
