Mira stepped into the quiet library moments after the final lights flickered overhead. She had left a small leather journal on the highest shelf beside the main stair, hidden behind a thick atlas. The pages carried sketches of a raven-shaped brooch, and the idea felt too precious to leave overnight. A wheeled ladder leaned nearby, but its frame had been shifted by the cleaners. When Mira pulled, one wheel snagged on a bookmark and refused to roll. If she had arrived earlier, the ladder would have stood exactly where she left it.

She dragged the ladder free, guided it to the railing, and began to ascend. Halfway up, the wheels slid on the polished step and the entire frame shuddered. Her hands tightened; loose pamphlets left on the tread started to scatter like startled birds. Mira let the ladder descend a little, gathered the papers, and stowed them in a wooden alcove beneath the stair. A draft rustled through the corridor and dimmed a row of lamps. She wished she had locked that side door as well. Still determined, she pushed an old rubber mat under the wheels and climbed again, each rung steady under her weight.

From the top platform, her fingers reached behind the atlas—nothing waited there. Her shoulders stiffened. Then something cold brushed her palm: a silver point wedged inside the gutter of the shelf. She tugged, and the missing brooch, not the journal, slipped into her hand. The clasp had been polished; moonlight traced the tiny raven wings. Beneath the ornament lay a folded sheet torn from the journal; every sketch had been cut away. Mira froze, her breath caught between shelves. She slid the brooch into her pocket, closed the atlas, and climbed down carefully. Dust motes rested in a narrow beam above the silent stair.
