Fine early dew had already soaked the tall grass before Forrest reached the launch hilltop. Leftover moisture still cooled his bare ankles as he steadily braced for another careful throw. He gripped the plane between thumb and forefinger, testing balance along the fresh crease. Below, Grant waited by the chalk circle, his stopwatch swinging under the bright sky. The target had been marked earlier, yet his utterance about the flight blurred in wind. Forrest exhaled and firmly flicked his wrist, sending the shape forward with a quick snap. The plane suddenly hissed into a hot updraft from the red-brick chimney behind the school. Warm streams met cool air like a waterfall, pushing the craft sideways with tremendous lift. It soared over the target and glided beyond, finally landing near the lower retrieval zone. Forrest trotted down while the paper warmed, leaving it as soft as a cauldron rim.

At the folding bench he flattened the nose and shaved a sliver from each wingtip with the ruler. He then added a paper clip to the nose, a small change that his shoulder felt while he climbed back. Reaching the hilltop, he lifted the plane and launched again with a quicker sharp flick. The slightly warmed paper still caught the chimney’s rising breath just above the grassy slope. The heavier nose dipped early, slicing through the rising swirl and robbing it of strength. The plane drifted downward in a shallow arc, brushed the chalk line, and tumbled onto damp grass. A puff of cooler air from the shaded slope cooled its surface and the cascade of lifting heat faded. A sparrow near the bench beat its wings low as the white triangle skimmed quickly past. It darted above the grass and vanished behind the slow plume above the tall chimney.

在摺紙長椅旁，他壓平機頭，用尺子刮去翼尖薄薄一層，並在機頭夾上一枚迴紋針，這小小改動在他爬坡時就能感到重量差異。回到丘頂，他舉機至耳旁，再次用更俐落的手勢投出。微熱的紙面依舊捕住煙囪升起的暖流，但較重的機頭提早下壓，切穿旋升氣旋，奪走其力量。飛機沿淺弧降落，擦過粉筆圈後翻在濕草上。陰坡吹來的一股冷風迅速帶走機身殘餘熱勢，整個抬升鏈反而逐漸消散。長椅旁一隻麻雀低拍雙翼，讓白色三角形從身邊掠過。牠掠過草尖，消失在煙囪上方緩緩升起的煙羽後。
