Gwen’s goal was clear: reach the far bank where a tin vessel of cool water hung beside stacked paper cups. She had read on the park notice that the centre dip counted as the commitment phase of the crossing, so she planned to hurry and finish before the bridge gathered too much sway. Once the volunteer lifted a hand, she stepped forward, toes landing in quick rhythm. Oscillations piled up like overlapping waves; the handrails swung wider, and her knees lurched sideways. Gwen tightened her grip, but her rapid pattern only grew wilder, forcing her to halt a step short of the midpoint.

Pebbles clicked below, and the dog’s second bark bounced off the wooden posts just as Gwen shifted her foot onto the next plank. The board sagged two extra centimetres; its fixing ropes had been worn smooth by many shoes, and the unexpected drop jolted her balance. She tried to keep in mind her earlier commitment to finish without stopping, yet the bridge now twisted under both hands. If she timed each new step with the rising return of the previous dip, the side swing would shrink. She bent her knees, slowed her breathing, and began planting each foot only when the plank beneath was climbing back toward level. The sway softened, the handrails steadied, and the frayed board no longer felt like a trap door. Wind brushed amber light across the ropes, and a thin stream of dust from the hemp curled into the air, drifting toward the far bank. Gwen was shifting her weight onto the final plank when the dog splashed into the water below.
