Wade crouched and brushed a finger over a pale ring of grit on the sun-warmed step. The mark looked like a tiny eddy frozen in amber dust, circling a darker centre no wider than a coin. Each time a commuter passed, the metal tread rang under their shoes, shaking more powder loose. Rosa waited below in the shelter, earphones hiding her focus, but Wade stayed on the bridge, sketchbook balanced against his knee. He slid a blunt pencil around the ring, copying its uneven curve. The wind pushed hard through the glass gaps, turning pages and slipping the graphite line; that gust became the first hurdle, yet the outline still formed, shaky but clear against the creamy paper.

A sharp patter on the roof cut through the hum of traffic. Rain arrived without warning and the loudspeaker crackled to announce a platform change. Wade pressed the sketchbook against his chest and hurried down the stairs, water already spotting the paper. Inside the waiting shelter, diesel smell mixed with warm coffee light, and Rosa flicked one earphone aside for a silent greeting. Minutes later the shower eased, and orange digits on the display reset. Wade ventured back to the bridge. The step now shone wet, and the swirl had spread; fine dust had washed outward, uncovering a brass token wedged in the centre. What had seemed a stain was really a cover for hidden metal.

He tapped the token with his pencil; it rocked but stayed stuck. The softened grit offered a new kind of bounty, a thin muddy paste that let the point slip underneath. With careful pressure he levered the edge, and the token lifted, carrying a ribbon of brown water that fell through the gap like a tiny waterfall. The discovery came as a surprise; such things appeared only once in a blue moon on a commuter bridge. Wade turned the piece over, noting letters worn smooth by years of shoes, then pressed it into a fresh page beside the rain-speckled drawing. A final drop slid from the brass as he placed the pencil across the notebook on the chilled bench.
