Warm light fills his bedroom.
Laughter floats in from the hallway.
The book sits on the high shelf.
Joel places a wooden block below.
He steps up and reaches.
His fingers miss the book.
Dust drifts around his hands.
Joel puts a small pillow above.
He stands again, reaching higher.
The book wiggles yet stays.
Joel lays a folded cloth on top.
He steadies his feet carefully.
One gentle push tilts the book.
A stuffed dog falls onto the rug.
The book slides into his arms.
He opens it on the bed.
A broad river flows across the picture.
Another river bends on the next page.
Outside, a small bird lands.
