Why does that footprint shrink? I sit on warm sand. It is a school holiday. My mother sits beside me. My mother says, "Soft waves whisper." Bright light reflects on wet sand. A damp footprint rests nearby. The sun presses on it now. Dark edges blur. Sand grains slip with a soft hiss.

A foam ring drifts near a rock. Sea breeze blows over it. Colors dance on the skin. Foam pops. Thick seaweed lies beside the crackling salt crust. I watch the footprint again. Part of the mark is gone. Only a pale arch stays. Flat sand spreads in silence. A tiny crab skitters away.
