Mira’s boots tapped along the damp stones of the old salt tunnel, each step echoing toward a cavern revealed only when the sea pulled back. A notebook and graphite sticks pressed against her side; she intended to capture whatever glimmer waited beyond the bend. When her pocket torch flicked on, scalloped walls materialised, and emerald constellations brightened: clusters of phosphorescent fungi clinging to crevices like tiny lanterns. Drips from the ceiling pattered onto her sketchbook cover, forming dark freckles across the cardboard. She lifted the torch higher to scrutinize a ledge, but the beam bounced off a sudden curtain of mist thrown in by a distant wave.

Vapour drifted through the chamber in a shifting veil, softening every outline. The notebook slipped from her hand, landed spine-up, and pages fanned across the slick floor. Bending to retrieve it, she noticed that her camera strap had snagged on a jagged bit of quartz; a gentle tug failed, so she steadied the lamp against her knee and eased fabric free with slow fingers. The scattered light painted abstract swirls on the haze, and for a moment the scene resembled an ai hallucination she had once seen projected inside a planetarium dome—colours blooming without a clear source. A fresh gust funnelled through the tunnel, carrying the briny scent of open water and pushing ripples across a shallow pool that bisected the room.

On the pool’s far side, pale shapes quivered. At first glance they looked like anemone caught far from the ocean, tentacles wavering in hidden current. Mira waded ankle-deep to investigate, shoes squeaking against pebbles. As she neared, the “tentacles” unfurled into bead-thin fungus threads reacting to her warmth, their glow intensifying rather than fading. Startled, she stepped back; her heel struck a loose stone, and the torch skidded across the floor. Its beam spun wildly, striking higher shelves of organisms that had remained dark until now. One by one, fresh colonies ignited, each patch answering the stray light with a stronger radiance, until the entire ceiling shone like a nocturnal orchard. The tunnel behind her brightened as well, revealing forgotten cart rails and rusted hooks once swallowed by shadow.

Beyond the mouth of the cave, soft light from the colonies rested on the rippling pool.

池對岸出現幾團蒼白晃動物。乍看像被困在陸地的海葵，觸手在看不見的水流中搖曳。米拉涉水靠近，鞋底在礫石上發出吱聲。她走近才發現，那些「觸手」其實是感到熱度後舒展的細絲真菌，亮度隨之增強。她驚訝後退，一腳踢到鬆石，手電滾落，光束旋轉照到先前暗著的菌落。光落之處，新的群體相繼發亮，轉眼整個穹頂彷彿夜色果園。身後的隧道也隨之明亮，顯露出被陰影吞沒已久的舊礦車軌與鏽鉤。

洞口外，群落散出的柔光靜靜覆在漣漪水面上。
