Yesterday Leo planned a short visit to his grandmother.

He carried a bright kite across the quiet neighborhood.

He wanted to show the kite before the afternoon rain.

His backpack also held fresh cookies wrapped in colorful paper.

Clouds moved slowly, and the sky stayed clear.

A loose stone suddenly turned under his shoe and flew forward.

The stone hit a gate; the gate bumped a stacked cart.

The cart rolled downhill and blocked the narrow street.

A passing dog barked and startled Leo, so the kite slipped.

Its long tail wrapped around a low branch near the wall.

Leo could not reach the branch from the wet pavement.

He stacked two empty boxes and climbed with careful steps.

The branch bent; the kite dropped safely into his arms.

Light rain began, and Leo hurried toward Grandmother's open door.

Raindrops clicked softly against the shiny glass window.

He set the kite on her small table.
