Ben sits on a short stump. The air is warm. He sees ants cross a root. Beyond a wooden fence a rug unfurls. Two children place bread for a picnic. Birdsong drifts above the grass. A red napkin flaps once.

A small band walks along the path. Soft drum taps mix with bells. Ben watches the players turn left. Soon a class on a trip appears. Bright hats bob between tree trunks. His friend Leo stands beside a bench. Leo waves but stays in place. Clouds move and shade the stump. A lone leaf lands on Ben. Ben stays very still.
