Griffon kneels beside the sound.
He spots a flat stone.
He grips the smooth grey circle.
Mud holds the stone hard.
Stone sticks.
Morning light glows soft yellow.
Griffon tugs for a long time.
Joel watches from the step.
Joel turns another page; a cartoon patient waves from the paper.
He rolls a short stick under.
The stick acts as a lever.
Mud loosens.
The stone lifts with a pop.
Bright metal blinks below it.
A small number marks the year.
A tiny toy watch ticks.
Hands point to twelve.
Griffon laughs; joy rings out.
He lowers the watch again.
He presses the stone back.
Wet mud closes over the edge.
A faint dent stays.
Joel folds his sketchbook.
Both children walk indoors.
The distant tick still hides.
