An Empty Peg at the Weather Station-

English 原文
Petra paused outside the weather hut, watching the anemometer cups blur into silver as gusts skated across the clearing. On the hook beside the door, only her canvas jacket swayed; the partner peg hung bare, announcing a quiet absence. Morning air tasted metallic, like biting a cold coin, and dew left a faint briny film on her lip when she breathed. She stood a moment longer, letting the rain gauge's bright plink mark passing seconds in uneven rhythm. The alignment looked correct, yet the scene carried a skewed balance she could not parse. A faint citrus tang drifted from crushed clover underfoot, stirring a memory she chose not to follow.
Inside, cedar walls breathed a sweet, woody aftertaste that mingled with the stub of a lavender scented candle resting in a saucer. The logbook lay open, last evening’s column blank, the row beneath hers waiting like untouched dough. She licked a fleck of graphite from her thumb, chalky and bitter, then lifted the pencil for the first entry of the day. Numbers arrived easily—temperature, humidity, pressure—yet her hand slowed when she reached the wind-speed box. A tentative letter replaced the usual digits, a strange gesture meant to break the mold of ordered figures. She murmured, "Zero point four millimetres," as if taste-testing the phrase before trusting it to paper.
Near noon the sun reached its zenith, flooding the Stevenson screen with white glare that tasted of hot tin when Petra pulled the louvered door wider. A stronger gust snapped through, and the cups now seemed to swim against the tide, reversing for three awkward half-turns before settling. She leaned forward over the thermometer housing, measuring the shine on the mercury before writing. A moth rose from the screen’s shade and drifted between her eyes and the mercury column, its wings dusting her lips with a stale, papery flavour. Blinking, she stepped back, leaving the reading blank, and closed the screen without the usual click of completion. Inside the hut the recording drum ticked onward, its ink trace crawling like a slow worm toward afternoon minutes.
Afternoon drifted in, carrying a mellow saltiness from the distant hayfield, yet the partner hook remained empty and the second teacup stayed upside down on the shelf. After tasting the tannin’s lingering bite, she drew a single slash across the vacant column, leaving the width of a breath beside it. Steam drifted upward in a line straight as a weather vane’s spine, then bent eastward when the next gust passed the hillside. The slash, slanting alone, mirrored the empty peg on the wall, without ever claiming to replace the missing shape. Her knuckles rested against the hut’s half-open door, the cedar edge cool under her skin, as the rain gauge offered one faint, unanswered plink.
