The Brick That Held The Gate Open -

English 原文
Small bells on the sheep rang in uneven taps.
A hinge squeaked near the yard gate.
Ruby walked up the path with a compact basket.
Warm air lay over the short grass.
Idris, the herdsman, stood by the water trough and waved.
"The gate sticks," he said. "It squeaks today."
Ruby pushed the gate with her hip and the basket.
The bottom edge dragged against a loose brick.
The shove tipped a broom that leaned by the fence.
The broom bumped a tin cup, and the cup rolled.
Ruby stopped and set the basket down first.
First she moved the brick to hold the gate open.
Then she lifted the broom and set it upright.
After that she pulled the latch and pushed the gate.
A hawk dropped onto the fence and made the rail dip.
Its claw gripped the post, and the gate moved inward.
The gate met the brick and stayed where she left it.
Idris let out a short laugh near the trough.
"It stays open now," he said. "Nice work."
Ruby stepped through, lifted the compact basket, and walked in.
She set the basket on the low step beside Idris.
