Kay taps the foam; it slides back.
Kay crouches at the edge.
Kay kneels; palms press sand; a foam line clings.
An earthy smell rises from dark seaweed.
Kay cups her hands.
They capture a wobbly foam pocket.
It slips out at once.
Pop. Pop.
The father sits by the planks.
One hand keeps the page still.
"The page flaps," he says.
Kay leans over the tide pool.
She taps the still surface with a flat stick.
Rings move outward and touch a shell.
A small crab waits on a slick rock.
Kay stands on the planks by a wooden counter.
She drags her sandy palm along the counter edge.
Grains hiss and make a thin line.
A small bird hops up and pecks it.
Kay holds still; the bird pecks again.
It lifts a grain and blinks.
The bird lifts and skims past the planks.
