Milo pushed open the warped door of the old market shed. Afternoon light crossed shelves where empty jars leaned, and a faint smell of dry thyme floated near cracked tiles. The spring festival stood two days away, and he planned one small task: uplift a dusty banner so it could greet visitors during the occasion. The banner lay folded beside a dented paint tin; its colors had faded since an herbalist stored it here years earlier. A poster of climbing plants had been glued across one pane, its corners brittle. Milo set a wooden stool beneath the main beam and reached up with a brush loaded in fresh blue.

The first stroke flaked more paint than it added, and the board shivered under his touch. A sharp rustle answered him. A chipmunk sprang from a cracked flowerpot, dashed over the stool, and vanished through a gap. Milo rocked backward; the brush slipped, splattering blue circles on the floor. If the stool tipped any farther, the whole tin would dip. He steadied it, then tried again, yet the beam remained just beyond his fingertips. He scanned the clutter until he spotted a narrow ladder built decades ago by his gardening instructor. Hinges had rusted shut, so he braced one boot against the frame and flexed the sides until the joints loosened.

Balanced on the revived ladder, Milo raised the banner toward the beam. From this height he noticed a tin box wedged behind a slat. He eased it free; dried sage crumbled inside, nothing more. He smiled at the practical treasure and slid the box into his pocket. The banner’s cord snagged twice before sliding over the beam, and gusts pushing through the broken pane began to uplift its edge in gentle waves. Wind flipped the cloth that had covered the wall, exposing a carved emblem: a mortar and pestle marked by the herbalist’s careful hand. Dust hovered under the exposed carving.
